^ This design was such a hallmark of the Celtic people that Irish Christians found a way to bring it into their new faith by adopting the symbol as a representation of the Blessed Trinity.

Etymology

The word symbol came to the English language by way of Middle English, from Old French, from Latin, from the Greek σύμβολον (sýmbolon) from the root words συν- (syn-), meaning "together," and βολή (bolē), "a throw", having the approximate meaning of "to throw together", literally a "co-incidence", also "sign, ticket, or contract". The earliest attestation of the term is in the Homeric Hymn to Hermes where Hermes on seeing the tortoise exclaims συμβολον ηδη μοι "symbolon [symbol/sign/portent/encounter/chance find?] of joy to me!" before turning it into a lyre.

micro-level reality

.According to Craig Calhoun, Chris Rojek, and Bryan Turner in their book The Sage Handbook of Sociology symbols all interactions are guided by culture forces, which they labeled as the process of normalization in which people develop mutual expectations for categorization, Frames, forms of communication, ritual and emotions.^ One can transcend this downplaying of the message through cultivation of the very sensitivity to the medium as "culturally framing technological-literary form" that one learns from these two thinkers.

^ Since you will find all of these symbols in this book, a brief explanation of some of the more popular interpretations are listed on below: .

^ For the good people of Hawaii, it's the chance to see some of the biggest stars in the game that they would normally never get the chance to see.

.The viability of the encounter is, they believe, dependent upon the extent to which it has been successfully normatized along these dimensions.^ Upon arrival, they rest for a moment at the dock, and Locke tells Ben that he believes Ben is only seeking forgiveness for the death of Alex.

^ The meals the women prepare, or don't, as the case may be, are symbolic of the extent to which they conform to traditional gender roles and successfully blend Indian and American cultures.

Role of context in symbolism

.A symbol's meaning may be modified by various factors including popular usage, history, and contextual intent.^ Other popular symbols in Celtic art include the clockwise spiral, the anti-clockwise spiral, two spirals with clockwise rotation, a double spiral and some variations of these basic patterns.

^ Although the symbolism of celtic designs may have been lost, many of the designs remain popular today and will often be seen used in the design of jewellery and in particular Celtic Wedding rings.

Historical meaning

.This history of a symbol is one of many factors in determining a particular symbol's apparent meaning.^ Does it have something to do with night hours, or is it just that one must be "summoned" to see, which means too many eyes is a no-no for the invisible shapeshifter.
  • Channel Surfing | greenbaypressgazette.com | Green Bay Press-Gazette 16 September 2009 11:34 UTC www.greenbaypressgazette.com [Source type: General]

^ Communication between one and another is so fragile that one simple word can have so many meanings.

^ Although the symbolism of celtic designs may have been lost, many of the designs remain popular today and will often be seen used in the design of jewellery and in particular Celtic Wedding rings.

Old symbols become reinterpreted, due perhaps to environmental changes. Consequently, symbols with emotive power carry problems analogous to false etymologies.
.For example, the Irish and Scottish American elements of design in the Rebel Flag of the American South predate the American Civil War.^ Well, we all know how the war ended, and eventually both the North and the South were flying the same flag with the same number of stars and stripes.

The cross derives from the Roman Empire's use of large wooden crosses to crucify alleged criminals.

Juxtaposition

Juxtaposition further complicates the matter. .Alone, the cross is a symbol of Christianity.^ Celtic crosses, which predate Christianity, can symbolize the four quarters of the earth and or the four elements — earth wind and fire.

^ The symbolism here is obviously Christian and comes from Jesus on the cross.

.However, a cross set on fire on a lawn is a distinct, racist symbol of the Ku Klux Klan, even though the original cross lacks racist implications.^ But lets admit that film really lack a story, even though it was the story of the Spartans vs. Persians.
