The Tatakau Shisho (戦う司書?) series is a collection of Japanese light novels by Ishio Yamagata, with illustrations by Shigeki Maeshima. The series started with the release of the first volume on September 22, 2005, and as of January 22, 2010, ten volumes have been published by Shueisha under their Super Dash Bunko label. A manga adaptation by Kokonotsu Shinohara was serialized in Shueisha's Internet-based manga magazine Ultra Jump Egg between March 2008 and October 2009. An anime adaptation, The Book of Bantorra began airing in Japan on October 2, 2009.

In a world where deceased people turn into stone-like books and are stored in the Bantorra Library, where anyone who reads a book can learn their past. Bantorra Library is maintained by Armed Librarians who wield psychic powers and their enemy is a psychotic religious society known as Shindeki Church. As the story progresses it presents a world of sorrow, pain, and the unfairness and frugality of life as well as personal desires. However, in each arc there is also a small underlying hope and more of the reasons, conspiracies, and secrets are revealed behind everything. There is no real main character, maybe Hamutz Meseta as she's the only original cast who won't die. It is about a specific overall history in time of Bantorra Library and its people. Each character dies a sorrowful yet meaningful death as each death will open paths to a small ray of hope in the world which also reveals a part of a secret to the reader.

Armed Librarians

Hamutz Meseta (ハミュッツ メセタ Hamyuttsu Meseta?)
Voiced by: Romi Park
Along with Mokkania the strongest armed librarian, she is the acting director of the Armed Librarians with a battle lust to fight those strong enough to kill her. She usually wears a white shirt with a small bunny cartoon on her right breast. She has a calm personality and always hopes to meet someone that can defeat her. She had a relationship with Mattalast in the past. She mainly uses a sling (usually wrapped around her right wrist) to snipe enemies from a far distance. She can throw many things but usually uses small rocks or pebbles. Her throwing speed can reach 5 times the speed of sound. Her weapon was so strong that even Shlamuffen (the weapon used by Segal and once used by Shiron) couldn't destroy it. Her magic ability is "Sensor Silk", which she uses to sense people, including visual and hearing. Her silks, fully emitted, can reach approximately 50 kilometers, while the number of silks emitted reaches over billions. In background she met, fought, and likes Mattalast. When first met by Mattalast she said she was told by bunny, believes, and already embraces that she is the calamity that will end the world. It is found that she is supposedly the chosen one to make heaven's wish come true and for that reason the destruction of the world. She wishes to fight ever strong opponents as to die and not be the calamity of the world. Her one true wish is to have love. She loves Mattalast and is the only one left at end of the anime.
Mokkania (モッカニア Mokkania?)
Voiced by: Akira Ishida
Strongest armed librarian, along with Hamutz Meseta. He is a lonely man. He is so powerful that he fears his own power. During a war between the Bantorra Library and The Empire, he felt guilty after killing so many people. Therefore, he locked himself deep in the labyrinth beneath Bantorra Library. His magic ability is to control a very significant amount of flesh-consuming ants. A fake mother of Mokkania was created by Winkeny Bizee of Shindeki Church. Eventually, Mokkania committed suicide for his sins.
Ireia Kity (イレイア キティ Ireia Kiti?)
Voiced by: Akiko Takeguchi
The oldest Armed Librarian, and one of the five strongest armed librarians. Her job is to instruct trainee Armed Librarians. Her kind and friendly personality has earned the trust and love of most of the armed librarians. She mainly uses bare hand to hand combat. She has tremendous strength, which she uses to lift large and heavy objects easily. Her magic ability is time control, which she uses to change the time flow of any objects in her visual range. During a siege war at Bantorra Library, she is killed in the explosion of a bomb that released the Dragon Phenomia Disease.

Voiced by: Toru Ohkawa
First grade Armed Librarian, and one of the five strongest armed librarians. He usually wears a black suit and a black top hat. He is a calm person and always known by people as a liar. He used to have a relationship with Hamutz, however, Mattalast has many ladies with him, too. His main weapon is firearms. He bears a pistol and a rifle, which is as powerful as a tank cannon. His magic ability is to foresee a short-period of time in the future, which he can use to predict the action of the enemy and begin to attack or evade. He is one of the few who knows the heavens secret and also protects it. He also dies in the end.
Noloty (ノロティ Noroti?)
Voiced by: Haruka Tomatsu
Trainee Armed Librarian, very good in unarmed battle. She is a straight-forward person who doesn't like to kill people. She was born on an island near The Empire and raised by her father who was the head of the village. After her father passed away, she was thrown out of the village and eventually became an Armed Librarian. She mainly uses her bare hands in combat. She dies from a stab wound on her back, however died as one best good, consistent, and brave hero.
Mirepoc (ミレポック Mirepokku?)
Voiced by: Miyuki Sawashiro
Third grade Armed Librarian and is the instructor of Noloty. She was once a reserve officer of The Empire and was introduced by Hamutz Meseta to join the Armed Librarians. She usually wears her uniform and is a strict person. Luimon Mahaton, Volken and Milepoch are the same level armed librarians as she is. She mainly uses a sword or pistol. Her combat abilities are moderate and most of the time she is responsible for backup support. Her magic ability is "shared thought" (telepathy). Despite how far the person is located, she can send her thought to the person as long as she knows the name and the look of the person. Furthermore, she can communicate with the person if they are professionally trained to communicate in this kind of way before. She is in love with Volken but because of Volken's betrayal, she drank Argax to wipe away all her memories.
Volken (ヴォルケン Voruken?)
Voiced by: Yuuichi Nakamura
Third grade Armed Librarian. He has green hair and usually wears the robes of an Armed Librarian. He has a strong sense for justice. He has mastery of his weapon, the bladed discs, for offense or to float on and the special ability to create illusionary clones of himself. His fighting style is to create multiple illusions and quick movement between them supplemented by a bombardment of flying bladed discs that is offensively powerful while confusing opponents on which person/blade is real. Because of his strong sense of justice, he began to doubt Hamutz Meseta's actions. He eventually left the library, taking with him the Yluckluck, in order to find a way to free the Meats and dethrone Meseta. Because of his actions, the library names him a traitor. He eventually returned to the Library only to leave again with Renas Fluru aka Olivia Litlet in tow. He was stopped by his mentor and they fought on an island. The battle ended with Volken's victory, but his mentor was then killed and he got framed for his murder. Hamutz then hunted him down and they eventually battle. At first, Volken seems to have the upper hand in the battle but he got distracted from Hamutz revelation and he dies by her hand. He died knowing that the justice he believed in was all just a lie. His death however was not in vain as he was able to protect and buy Renas Fluru some time. In doing so, he allowed Renas, who was once a Meat, to grant her wish in returning all the lost memories of love of the Meats through the use of the ancient magic artifact, Yluckluck.
