The band formed when the members were just 15. The band was initially known as "kiros" according to the band's official biography on its website, but changed its name three years later to "Corona" (named after a typewriter brand), but when the Italian dance act Corona re-emerged, the band changed their name again to "The Coronas".[1]
Danny O'Reilly (son of Irish vocalist Mary Black), Conor and Graham hail from Terenure in Dublin, which is home to fellow Irish artists Republic of Loose and Rob Smith. Dave hails from Monkstown in Dublin.[1]
To date the Coronas biggest hit has been "San Diego Song" which has been in the Irish Singles Chart for 24 weeks. The band's debut album Heroes or Ghosts was released on October 5, 2007, debuting at #27 in the Irish Albums Chart, and was described by Hot Press as "walking a soulful line between Jeff Buckley and the Libertines” and stayed in the Irish album charts for a total of 26 weeks. The Coronas have appeared on RTE's Late Late Show, The Cafe and The Podge and Rodge Show, TV3's event guide, Channel 6's Popscene and radio shows, along with being interviewed on Youtube. The band won Jack Daniel's The JD Set in 2006.[citation needed] In 2008 the Coronas were nominated for a Meteor Award, in the Best Irish Pop Act category. The award was won by Westlife, on February 15, 2008. In 2009 they were nominated for two Meteors in the Best Pop and Best Live categories. Since such The Coronas are believed to be one of the most up and coming bands in Ireland receiving wide ranging support and affection from fans, many believe that it is only a matter of time before they find themselves recognised on a wider scale and this was helped with their second album.
Tony was an ex-con is the second album from The Coronas. The album was released in the Republic of Ireland on Friday, September 25, 2009. The album went straight into the number 1 spot in the Irish i-Tunes Album chart upon its release. The following week it debuted at #3 in the Irish Album Chart. The first single from album was Listen Dear. The second being "Far From Here". Their first televised live performance featuring the first single made its debut on Irish television on RTE One on The Late Late Show on Friday 18,2009. Prior to this televised performance the band did promotion for the album in print, radio and television media. The band appeared on the front cover of Hot Press magazine which hit news stands on Thursday September 24, 2009[2]. They also appeared in HMV Music stores around Ireland, doing in-store promotions. This album won the 2010 Meteor Award for Best Album beating U2 and Snow Patrol.
