The Firefly Cage was the first episode of the highly successful BBC series Lovejoy. The story was adapted by Ian La Frenais from the crime novel Firefly Gadroon by Jonathan Gash, the creator of the Lovejoy character. It first aired on 10 January 1986.

Plot summary

Lovejoy is beaten in an auction for a Japanese firefly cage and tries to find the winning bidder. She ends up finding him, hoping he can help her discover the secrets held by a similar cage. Lovejoy finds himself on the wrong side of a gang of antique burglars and needs to set out into the North Sea to solve the mystery. All together an interesting introduction to antique dealing for his new apprentice Eric.

Filming locations

The beach where the character Drummer had his shack was Shingle Street in Suffolk

The harbour and Coast Guard station were at Walberswick in Suffolk

The fort used was the Horse Sand Fort much further south in the Solent

The unveiling ceremony that Lady Jane is first seen at was filmed in Kersey, Suffolk

Felsham Hall was actually Belchamp Hall in Suffolk
