Introduction

.This novel supplies a genealogical table of five generations of a particular family named Vanger who are under investigation, which is for keeping track of the large number of family members.^ There are far too many members of the Vanger family to keep track of.  I like genealogy when it comes to my own family, but when it's someone else's family, especially in a suspense novel, too many characters are distracting and unnecessary.

.An epic tale of serial murder and corporate trickery spanning several continents, the novel takes in complicated international financial fraud and the buried evil past of a wealthy Swedish industrial family.^ This first novel of a trilogy more than satisfied all I look for in a thriller/crime novel. The plot concerns itself with a complicated international financial fraud, and the buried evil past of a wealthy incestuous Swedish industrial family. As the novel progresses a male journalist and young female emotionally disturbed punk hacker join forces to investigate both strands of the plot.In their different ways both of these main characters are engaging ,and I am excited to see how their relationship develops in the two further novels.

As well as literary references to the genre's classic forerunners, Larsson comments on contemporary Swedish society. .Reviewer Dessaix reports that "His favourite targets are violence against women, the incompetence and cowardice of investigative journalists, the moral bankruptcy of big capital and the virulent strain of Nazism still festering away ..."^ But there is a larger point here: how are we to read Blomkvist’s relationships given the surrounding story of violence against women?

in Swedish society.[1]
There are many similarities between the book and Jonathan Coe's What a Carve Up!, which also focuses on a writer (called Michael) who is employed by a member of a wealthy family to write a discrediting family memoir and investigate a decades-old crime. Both books deal with issues of corporate corruption, presenting a negative view of market speculators and laissez-faire economics.
He further enters the debate as to how responsible a criminal is for his or her crimes and how much is blamed on upbringing or society. He has Salander say, "It's as if we no longer believe anyone has a will of their own."[1] Salander has a strong will and assumes that everyone else does, too. .She is portrayed as having suffered every kind of abuse in her young life, including sexual assault and time in a psychiatric clinic.^ Salander has suffered enormous sexual and emotional abuse and has withdrawn to the point that she trusts no one.

.Since she holds others responsible for their actions she takes revenge on those who behave badly – which moves the plot along.^ The focus narrows pretty quickly, but I guess Larsson has so many plot points going at that stage that he needs to move things along.

.Salander, sullen, single-minded and sometimes vicious, is also incorruptible, a complete contrast to even the good guys in Larsson's world.^ Larsson's multi-pieced plot snaps together as neatly as an Ikea bookcase, but even more satisfying is the anti-social character of Salander ...
