The Girls Next Door, also known as The Girls of the Playboy Mansion, is an American reality television series broadcast on the E! cable television network. The series was created by executive producer Kevin Burns and Hugh Hefner, founder and editor-in-chief of Playboy magazine.

The show revolves around the daily lives of the girlfriends of Hugh Hefner. During Seasons 1-5 the show featured Holly Madison, Bridget Marquardt, and Kendra Wilkinson, and the fifth season concluded with the three leaving the Playboy Mansion for various reasons. Beginning with the sixth season, the show will focus on Hefner's new girlfriends - the Shannon twins, and Crystal Harris as his number one girlfriend. The sixth season debuted on October 11, 2009.[1]

The bow tie-wearing Playboy Bunny mascot is the icon for the show, appearing in its logo.

Seasons 1-5

The series focuses on the lives of Hefner's three girlfriends who live with him at the Playboy Mansion: Holly Madison, Bridget Marquardt, and Kendra Wilkinson. Hefner is often on the show along with various Playmates and other celebrities.

The series not only showcases events at the Playboy Mansion (e.g. Fight Night, Fourth of July celebration, the midsummer celebration etc.), but also sheds light on other Playboy related events such as the Playboy Jazz Festival at the Hollywood Bowl, Playmate test shoots at Playboy Studio West, Operation Playmate, party night, birthday parties, but more significantly the personalities and real lives of each of the Girls.

The Girls Next Door have appeared on the cover of Playboy magazine three times. To celebrate the success of the series, Playboy published a nude pictorial of Madison, Marquardt, and Wilkinson in the November 2005 issue. The original eight-episode run of the series was expanded to fifteen episodes with the first season finale airing in early December 2005. The series' second season began on July 30, 2006. To celebrate the launch of the second season, a second nude pictorial of the trio was published in September 2006. The third season of the show began airing March 4, 2007. Their third Playboy appearance was in the March 2008 issue, celebrating them being voted fourth in Playboy's annual "Sexiest Celebrities" online poll.

In the March 1, 2009 season finale of The Girls Next Door, Bridget leaves the mansion to film her new series, Bridget's Sexiest Beaches for the Travel Channel, Kendra moves out of the mansion to experience living on her own and date Hank Baskett, and though the episode doesn't feature Holly moving out, Hefner discusses her unhappiness at the mansion in not being able to get married or have a family which is the basis for her and him breaking-up and moving out. The final moments of the episode show Kristina and Karissa Shannon taking their place as Hefner's new girlfriends.

The show's theme song is Nasty Tales' remix of "Come on-a My House".

In October 2008, it was reported that Madison and Hefner had broken up.[2] He also acknowledged that his relationship with Wilkinson "will be ending when she moves out, probably by the end of this year."[3] In November 2008, it was announced that Wilkinson was engaged to NFL player Hank Baskett.[4] The wedding took place on June 27, 2009 at the Playboy Mansion where Hefner was rumored to be giving the bride away[5], but this has since been dismissed by Kendra who stated that her brother would be giving her away.[6] Despite this, Hefner also confirmed that the three girls are committed to a sixth season, though he will be looking for new live-in girlfriends.[2] Madison recently told Life & Style magazine, "Nobody knows how it's going to work post-breakup."[7]

Kendra currently stars in her own reality show called Kendra which premiered in June 2009.[8] Bridget Marquardt has also moved out of the mansion and broken up with Hef, and has started a television series of her own, called Bridget's Sexiest Beaches for The Travel Channel. Holly Madison also has her own show on E! (Holly's World) that shows her post-Hefner life in Las Vegas.

The March 1, 2009 season five finale was the last episode to feature Holly, Bridget and Kendra as Hefner's girlfriends.

Season 6

Season 6 stars Hugh Hefner's new girlfriends, 19-year-old twins Kristina and Karissa Shannon and 23-year-old Crystal Harris.[9] The twins both moved out of the mansion and into the playmate house in early 2010 with Hefner's blessing.[10]

Season 7

Season 7 will still feature new girlfriends Crystal Harris and Kristina and Karissa Shannon, even after the breakup between the twins and Hef. Season 7 has been confirmed on Hef's Twitter page.[11]
