Named after the small town of Riverdale from the Archie Comics, The Riverdales was formed in 1994. The founding members, Foster (guitar), Dan Schafer (bass guitar) and Dan Sullivan (drums), were all former members of Screeching Weasel, who had broken up earlier that year. Unlike Screeching Weasel, the members of The Riverdales were credited under their real names. They released their self-titled first album on July 7, 1995, on Lookout! Records. It was produced by Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong and Squirtgun's Mass Giorgini. They toured extensively that year as the opening act for the Mr. T Experience, and then for Green Day. Playing off this synergy, the Riverdales supported Green Day's 1995 tour. Also that year, the band's song "Back To You" appeared in the movie Angus.[1] Despite the reformating of Screeching Weasel in 1996, the Riverdales did not split up until after recording a second album, Storm The Streets, in 1997, and only reforming briefly in 2003 to record Phase 3.
In 2004, Foster rescinded all of the Riverdales masters from Lookout! Records. All of these masters had then been licensed to Asian Man Records. Asian Man reissued the first Riverdales album in 2006 with re-mastered sound and some bonus tracks including three unreleased tracks, "No Sense" from the Storm the Streets sessions, and live tracks from their tour with Green Day.[2]. The label also re-issued Phase 3 on October 7, 2008, with five bonus tracks.
On November 19, 2008, on his ESPN radio show, Weasel Radio, Ben Weasel announced that he and Danny Vapid had been demoing songs for a new Riverdales album, and recording would begin in February 2009. He also announced that The Riverdales would be playing live shows again.[3] and that Adam Cargin (of the Blueheels) would be the band's new drummer.[4] The album, titled Invasion USA, was released on July 14, 2009.
In September 2009, it was announced that Simon Lamb would be joining the band as second guitarist [5]. Prior to that, for live purposes, Dan Schafer was playing second guitar and singing while Justin Perkins, who had recorded Invasion U.S.A., played bass guitar. A couple of months later, in November 2009, Mike Park of Asian Man Records announced that Weasel had decided to sever his relationship with the label and that Recess Records would now be carrying the Screeching Weasel, Riverdales and Ben Weasel solo back catalogues[6].
On December 13, 2009, Weasel announced on his Twitter that the fifth Riverdales album would be called Tarantula. They began recording the next day. Weasel has stated that if he had had his way, Invasion USA would have been a double LP and that Tarantula should be considered part 2 of Invasion USA. Some confirmed song titles include Volcano, Infection, Bad Seed Baby, Diabolik, 12 To The Moon and When In Rome. The expected release date of Tarantula is some time in May, 2010.

The Riverdales are an American punk rock band from Chicago, Illinois made up of former Screeching Weasel members. Throughout their career, the band stuck with a punk rock sound very reminiscent of The Ramones. In fact, some would call them the modern day Ramones. Bassist Dan Schafer and guitarist Ben Foster both served as frontmen, splitting time singing lead vocals for the group. The Riverdales' original run lasted from 1994-1997. They reformed in 2003 to record what they thought would be their final album, but they once again reformed in 2008 and have a new record set to be released in July of 2009.

Despite the reformation of Screeching Weasel in 1996, the Riverdales did not split until after recording a second album, Storm The Streets, in 1997. Ben would later say that the stress of the Green Day tour severely damaged the relationship between the band members and that, in turn, led to the break up and Schafer and Sullivan's subsequent departures from Screeching Weasel. In 2003, Foster and Schafer, who had since repaired their relationship, reformed the group with drummer Dan Lumley to record Phase 3. The band went on hiatus following the record's release.
In 2004, Ben Weasel rescinded all of the Riverdales masters from Lookout! Records after being unable to resolve a breach of contract dispute over unpaid royalties with the label. All of these masters have since been licensed to Asian Man Records. Asian Man reissued the first Riverdales album in 2006 with re-mastered sound and a slew of bonus tracks including 3 unreleased tracks, "No Sense" from the Storm the Streets session, and live tracks from their tour with Green Day.[2]. The Label also re-issued Phase 3 on October 7th, 2008. There are five bonus tracks on the reissue including a re-done version of the popular song "Mental Retard" from their Storm The Streets album.

The band's logo is the number 27 with a circle around it. Very few people actually know the meaning of it. It is known that all three original members of The Riverdales have the logo tattooed on their flesh as does Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, Adam Woronoff from The Leftovers, and many fans from all around the world. The logo has made various appearances including the Screeching Weasel album Teen Punks in Heat. There are no plans to ever reveal the meaning of the number. As Ben Weasel said, "What good’s a secret society if it’s not exclusive?"
