'The Sitter' is a 1991 made-for-television movie starring Kim Myers as Nell an unstable baby-sitter, who lives in romance novels, and is sets out to get her dream to come true. This tv movie is a remake of the 1952 Marilyn Monroe movie Don't Bother to Knock.

Plot

The movie starts out with Nell, a shy and quiet girl be told she will baby-sit a young rich girl at a hotel while the girl's parents attend a party, she pushes Mary down the stairs. Nell, is constantly feeling isolated and believing in love like in romance novels, is taken with the little girl Melissa (Kimberly Cullum) she lets her call her mommy and gives her a marble she says is magic, lets her go with her to a toy store and while on the street play pick a card with a vendor who yells at Melissa saying she's cheating. Nell goes psychotic and yells at the man saying her daughter isn't a cheater. While at the hotel a dog tries to bite at Melissa, so Nell gets a toy plan flies into a back while the dog chases after it, and the dog is heard whimpering. Nell sees a handsome man named Jeff (Brett Cullen) across from the hotel room, while she's trying on Melissa's mother's clothes and jewels, he calls her up for a date. She imagines them married with Melissa as their daughter and two other children. He likes Nell but she starts acting insane asking if he loves her. The film ends with Nell on the ledge of the roof with Melissa and Jeff, he's telling her not to hurt Melissa and she lets Melissa go, who drops the marble and Nell runs on the ledge to get it and in her dream world she's talking to Jeff, Melissa and two other children, he says "Nell? Nell?" and the camera goes to the street in front of the hotel where Nell has fallen to her death has a smile on her face.
