Total Drama Action is the second season of the Canadian animated television series Total Drama Island. The show premiered in Teletoon Canada at 6:30 et/pt[2] on January 11, 2009. This series was also created by the makers of 6teen, another Teletoon program.

Plot

Like the previous season, much of Total Drama Action chronicles the events of the eponymous fictional reality shows. The Total Drama series itself is an "animated reality television series", which stars the cast and crew of the fictional series, parodying many aspects of reality television in general.

After last season's winner, Owen (Scott McCord), forgoes his prize money for a challenge (open to all 22 of Total Drama Island's contestants) in which the winner would receive C$1,000,000, the money was left in limbo after a situation resulted in a 14-way tie. As such, show host Chris McLean (Christian Potenza) had no choice but to commission a second competition with all 14 tied contestants. Following a two-day break, the contestants are told to arrive at an abandoned movie studio lot in Toronto, where the new competition, titled "Total Drama Action", would take place. Because of its location, Chris tells the contestants that the challenges would all be in the form of various movie genres. The accommodations of the contestants are similarly handled by Chef Hatchet (Clé Bennett) in a similar manner to how it was handled in the previous season.

After an initial challenge that determined which of the two trailers contestants would stay in, and a quick elimination of two contestants - the couple Geoff (Dan Petronijevic) and Bridgette (Kristin Fairlie), a second challenge determined the team captains of the two competing teams: the Screaming Gaffers, headed by Gwen (Megan Fahlenbock), and the Killer Grips, headed by Trent (Scott McCord). From then on, challenges would alternate between "reward challenges" where winners would receive a special prize, and "elimination challenges" where the losing team would vote off one of its own in an elaborate "Gilded Chris Ceremony". The pattern of reducing the contestants down was briefly interrupted on two occasions: once when Izzy (Katie Crown) was reinstated following a voting irregularity where her alter-ego, "E-Scope", was voted off, and another time when Courtney (Emilie-Claire Barlow), a contestant who did not originally qualify for Total Drama Action, successfully sued the show. The players eliminated would make the "walk of shame" and into the "Lame-o-sine", where they leave the movie studio.

Courtney's re-entry caused much controversy among the remaining contestants, due to the terms of her settlement allowed her an unfair advantage referred to simply as "Courtney's Rules". Several challenges after Courtney's re-entry, the Screaming Gaffers and the Killer Grips were dissolved, and the challenges became individual-oriented in nature. Because of Courtney, though, Chris took it upon himself to "level the playing field" by specifically altering the rules to disadvantage Courtney, and later, hiring Owen (who had earlier been eliminated almost entirely as a result of Courtney's re-entry) as his ringer to sabotage the other contestants. Eventually, Courtney would be eliminated and Owen fired when his status as a ringer is known, leaving two contestants remaining: Beth (Sarah Gadon) and Duncan (Drew Nelson). The Total Drama Action winner was Duncan. Beth wins in the alternate ending.

TDA Aftermath

Sprinkled among the episodes (taking the place of reward challenges) is TDA Aftermath, a show-within-a-show hosted by Geoff and Bridgette, commissioned shortly after their eliminations. On TDA Aftermath, Geoff and Bridgette interview eliminated contestants on their Total Drama Action experiences. They are accompanied by the contestants of Total Drama Island that did not qualify for Total Drama Action, as well as other previously-eliminated contestants. TDA Aftermath consisted of various "never-before-seen footage" sequences (purportedly taking place during the events of previous episodes), as well as two recurring segments, "That's Gonna Leave a Mark" (a segment of the contestants getting badly hurt), and "Truth or..." (in which a contestant is interviewed and are hurt if they lie to the hosts or the studio audience).

When the field eventually narrowed down to two contestants, a final obstacle course challenge would lead the contestants into the Aftermath set, with the first one arriving winning the show's million-dollar grand prize. Unfortunately, Beth and Duncan had sufficiently cooperated enough though the final challenge to arrive at the same time, and what was meant as a season recap became a show in which the winner would be determined. After efforts by the eliminated and nonparticipant contestants to come up with an impartial way of determining the winner all fail, Chris (supposedly leaving on vacation) ultimately returns to the set and has the eliminated (but not the nonparticipant) contestants vote for the winner.

Characters

The main Total Drama Action cast consists of host Chris McLean, assistant Chef Hatchet, and the contestants that make up the castmates. The remaining contestants from Total Drama Island also appear in the show, but serving in lesser capacities as commentators on The Aftermath.

Production

Like Total Drama Island, Total Drama Action was developed and produced by Fresh TV, targeting an age group of 10 to 15 year olds. Many of the show's settings, as well as the show's opening sequence, are deliberately made to be as close as to their Total Drama Island counterparts as possible; Camp Wawanakwa, the setting of Total Drama Island, was also revisited on several occasions, most notably as the site of some of the season's challenges.

All of the cast of Total Drama Island return in the same roles as that of Total Drama Island, though some had their roles reduced as their characters were not as prominent in this season. As with Total Drama Island, two endings were commissioned for the series, one with each of the final two competitors winning; after the airing of the penultimate episode and prior to the season finale, viewers were prompted to the show's website (either at Teletoon for viewers in Canada or Cartoon Network for American viewers) to vote for the desired ending. Unlike Total Drama Island, however, the alternate ending was available as a webcast on the show's website immediately following its airing. (The Total Drama Island alternate ending had also aired in other markets, but was never aired in English. However, none that have aired its alternate ending have so far aired any portion of Total Drama Action nor the Total Drama Island special episode.)

  • Episodes 6, 12, and 18 are TDA Aftermaths, meaning this episode didn't have any challenges. Episode 26 is also a TDA Aftermath but is also the second part of the season's final challenge.

1 Izzy returned using her real name (but later made a new alter-ego, Explosivo) because she was first voted off as her first name, E-Scope.

4 In episodes 2 and 24, two people were voted off instead of one.

5 DJ quit the game because he felt guilty for cheating by making an illegal alliance with Chef Hatchet.

6 Courtney sued Total Drama Action because she originally did not qualify, and in the episode she made her debut in, she was immune from being voted off, even though everyone voted for Courtney (except for herself) at the Gilded Chris Ceremony.

7 Lindsay was the actual winner of this challenge.

8 Owen did not participate in the challenge.

9 Owen wasn't voted off but was actually "fired" by Chris.

10 This challenge was supposed to see who would win the million dollar prize, but Beth and Duncan tied, therefore, they both won the challenge.

Plot

Like the previous season, much of Total Drama Action chronicles the events of the eponymous fictional reality shows. The Total Drama series itself is an "animated reality television series", which stars the cast and crew of the fictional series, parodying many aspects of reality television in general.

After last season's winner, Owen (Scott McCord), forgoes his prize money of C$100,000 for a challenge (open to all 22 of Total Drama IslandTemplate:'s contestants) in which the winner would receive C$1,000,000, the money was left in limbo after a situation resulted in a 14-way tie. As such, show host Chris McLean (Christian Potenza) had no choice but to commission a second competition with all 14 tied contestants. The contestants are told to arrive at an abandoned movie studio lot in Toronto, where the new competition, titled "Total Drama Action", would take place. Because of its location, Chris tells the contestants that the challenges would all be in the form of various movie genres. The accommodations of the contestants are handled by Chef Hatchet (Clé Bennett) in a similar manner to how it was handled in the previous season.

The players eliminated would make the "walk of shame" and into the "Lame-o-sine", where they leave the movie studio.

Once seven contestants were left, the Screaming Gaffers and the Killer Grips were dissolved, and the challenges became individual-oriented in nature. Chris hired Owen as his ringer to sabotage the other contestants and to create drama. Eventually, two contestants were left standing: Beth (Sarah Gadon) and Duncan (Drew Nelson).
