Treinta y Tres is a small town in Uruguay.


Location and name

It is situated in eastern Uruguay. It is the capital of the department with the same name.

The name is Spanish for "33" and refers to the nineteenth-century national heroes the 33 Orientales, who freed Uruguay from Brazilian control.


The town's population is 25,711 (2004 census). It is by far the largest town in what is a sparsely populated department.
