Trikonasana (tree-cone-AH-sa-na), or Triangle Pose, is an important pose (asana) in Hatha yoga. The pose is usually performed twice, once facing left, and once facing right. For the right side, one stands with the knees unbent and the legs spread one leg-width apart, turning the right foot all the way to the right and the left foot slightly (not more than 45 degrees) to the right, keeping the heels in line with one another. The arms are spread out to the sides, parallel to the ground, palms facing down; the trunk is then extended as far as is comfortable to the right side, while the arms remain parallel to the floor. Once the trunk is fully extended to the right, the right arm is dropped so that the right hand rests on the shin, on a block or on the floor, to the inside (left side) of the right foot, with the palm down. (Note the difference between this and Utthita Trikonasana, or Extended Triangle Pose, in which the hand is placed on the floor to the outside (right side) of the right foot.) At the same time, the left arm is extended straight up, and the spine and trunk are gently twisted counterclockwise (i.e., upwards to the left, since they're roughly parallel to the floor), using the extended arms as a lever, while the spinal axis remains parallel to the ground. The arms are stretched away from one another, and the head is often turned to gaze at the left thumb, slightly intensifying the spinal twist. (For the left side, all descriptions are right/left reversed.)

Trikonasana stimulates blood flow to the head, and helps to stretch and relax the back, shoulders, legs and arms. The muscles of the thighs, calves and hamstrings are stretched. A slight twist of the spine is involved.

  • The Utthita Trikonasana is an extended Triangle Position.[1]
  • The Parivritta Trikonasana is a Revolved Triangle Pose[2]
