In Shinto belief, the quality of impurity or misfortune is called tsumi. It can arise through defilement by corpses or menstruation, by hostility toward others or the environment or through natural catastrophies. Tsumi requires purification and can be removed by paying attention to problems as they arise. People may be purified in a spontaneous movement that washes over them bringing them into awareness of unity with the universe. There is also a ritual form of cleaning called oharai [1]
