Sunlight scattered in the upper atmosphere illuminates the lower atmosphere, and the surface of the Earth is neither completely lit nor completely dark. The sun itself is not actually visible because it is below the horizon. .Owing to the unusual and romantic quality of the ambient light at this time, twilight has long been popular with photographers and painters, who refer to it as "sweet light" or the "blue hour", after the French expression l'heure bleue.^ And If you don't like twilight and hate on people who do, Why are you wasting your time looking up stuff about it?

The collateral adjective of "twilight" is crepuscular (for daylight it is diurnal and for night, nocturnal). The term is most frequently encountered when applied to certain species of insects and mammals that are most active during that time.

Definitions

Various definitions of twilight
Twilight is defined according to the solar elevation angle θs, which is the position of the geometric center of the sun relative to the horizon. There are three established and widely accepted subcategories of twilight: civil twilight (brightest), nautical twilight, and astronomical twilight (darkest).
Definition Sun's centre relative to mathematical horizon[2]
Day -0° 50' ≤ θs
Sun's lower limb at horizon θs = -0° 20'
Center of Sun's disk at horizon θs = -0° 35'
Sun's upper limb at horizon θs = -0° 50'
Civil twilight -6° ≤ θs < -0° 50'
Nautical twilight -12° ≤ θs < -6°
Astronomical twilight -18° ≤ θs < -12°
Night θs < -18°

Note that if the sun is 8½ degrees below the horizon, it provides the same level of illumination to the surface of the Earth as a full moon directly overhead.
(For these definitions, an ideal horizon 90° from the zenith is used.)

Civil twilight

Under civil twilight circumstances, the horizon is clearly visible, and terrestrial objects are easily perceptible, without artificial light.
.Morning civil twilight begins when the geometric center of the sun is 6° below the horizon (the point of civil dawn), and ends at sunrise.^ THE SEARCH IS ON FOR NATIVE AMERICAN TEEN TO PLAY KEY ROLE IN MAJOR MOTION PICTURE. ("Twilight" begins shooting in Oregon at the end of February) .

In general, civil twilight is the point where artificial illumination is required to read outside.[2]
.The brightest stars appear during the civil twilight, as well as planets, such as Venus, which is known as the 'morning star' and/or 'evening star'. During this period there is enough light from the sun that artificial sources of light may not be needed to carry on outdoor activities.^ I didn't notice these in Twilight, but there is a string of lights on the wall over Bella's dresser in the New Moon movie.

A military unit may treat BMNT and EENT with heightened security (i.e. a process called "stand to" in which everyone pulls security). This is partially due to tactics dating back to the French and Indian War (part of the Seven Year's War of 1756-1763), when combatants on both sides would use BMNT and EENT to launch attacks.

.Most casual observers would consider the entire sky already fully dark even when astronomical twilight is just beginning in the evening or just ending in the morning, and astronomers can easily make observations of point sources such as stars, but faint diffuse items such as nebulae and galaxies can only be properly observed beyond the limit of astronomical twilight.^ And still even then I would most likely do a little test run to see if I liked having it there and how easy it was to cover up first, most likely with henna.

Theoretically, the dimmest stars ever visible to the naked eye—those of the sixth magnitude—will appear in the evening once the sun falls more than 18° below the horizon (i.e. when astronomical dusk occurs) and disappear when the sun moves to within 18° of the horizon in the morning (when astronomical dawn occurs). .However, because of light pollution, some localities—generally those in large cities—may never have the opportunity to view even fourth-magnitude stars, irrespective of the presence of any twilight at all.^ May 05, 2009 10:25:03 twilight is the best movie in al the world more that all others that i meet....

Length

The number of daylight hours depends on the latitude and time of year. There are brief times in March and September where continuous daylight exists at locations near either pole.
The length of twilight after sunset and before sunrise is heavily influenced by the latitude of the observer. In the Arctic and Antarctic regions, twilight (if at all) can last for several hours. .There is no civil twilight at the poles within a month on either side of the winter solstice.^ No, I didn't find anything in either that wasn't saturated with FAIL. The precise position of the polar circles, and thus of the regions where twilight can continue through local midnight, varies slightly from year to year with Earth's axial tilt. The lowest latitudes at which the various twilights can continue through local midnight are approximately 60.561° ( 60° 33’ 43” ) for civil twilight, 54.561° ( 54° 33’ 43” ) for nautical twilight and 48.561° ( 48° 33’ 43” ) for astronomical twilight.[3][4]
These are the largest cities, of their respective countries, where the various twilights can continue through local midnight:
Although Helsinki, Oslo, Stockholm, Tallinn and Saint Petersburg do not actually get civil twilight from sunset to sunrise, in mid summer they do have noticeably lighter skies at night (white nights).

On other planets

.Twilight on Mars is longer than on Earth, lasting for up to two hours before sunrise or after sunset.^ But as a full-fledged, two-hour movie, the stakes are much higher, and Twilight simply comes across as amateurish, laden with eye-rolling tedium.

From LoveToKnow 1911

TWILIGHT, formerly known as Crepusculum (a Latin word meaning dusky or obscure), properly the interval during which the atmosphere is illuminated after the setting of the sun. The analogous phenomenon in the morning, i.e. the interval between the first appearance of light and the rising of the sun, is known as the dawn. These phenomena are due to the light of the sun after refraction by the atmosphere being reflected to the observer by the clouds, dust, and other adventitious matter present in the atmosphere. Even in the early infancy of astronomy, the duration of twilight was associated with the position of the sun below the horizon, and measurements were made to determine the maximum vertical depression of the sun which admitted the phenomena. This was found by Alhazen, Tycho Brahe and others, to be about 18°, and although other observers obtained somewhat different values, yet this value is now generally admitted. The duration of twilight is therefore measured by the time in which the sun traverses an arc of 18° of vertical depression, and primarily depends on the latitude of the observer and the declination of the sun. It is subject to several minor variations, occasioned by the variable amount of dust, clouds, &c. suspended in the .air; and also on the temperature, which alters the altitude of the reflecting particles; thus at the same place and on the same day, the morning twilight or dawn is generally shorter than the evening twilight.^ Twilight was better than, I expected, even though they changed they storyline a bit, they kept very much in line with the book.

The duration and possibility of twilight may be geometrically exhibited as follows: Let 0 be the position of the observer (fig. i); Z, the zenith; P, the pole of the heavens; ADB, the plane of the horizon; EDF, the path of the sun. Let the circles ADB and FDE intersect in the points D and D1; then these points correspond to the rising and setting of the sun. .Now twilight prevails from sunrise or sunset until the sun is depressed through 18°; hence if we draw arcs ZC and ZC I equal to 108°, and terminating on the circle FDE at C and C 1, then the arcs DC and D,C 1 represent the distance traversed by the sun during the twilight.^ Twilight books are a good read except the over indulgence in depression through the 2nd book n the unrealism of the love situation.

Also it may be observed that C 1 EC represents the path of the sun during the night, and Dfdi during the day. The arc CD is readily determined by spherical trigonometry. For, join CP by an arc of a great circle; then in the triangle ZPC we know ZP (the colatitude of O); PC (the sun's polar distance) and ZC (= 108° by construction). .Hence the angle ZPC, the sun's hour angle, may be found; this gives the time before or after noon when the sun passes C. The times of sunrise and sunset being known, then the arcs DC and D 1 C 1 (and the duration of dawn and twilight) are determined.^ Wish I had found this before I had my own Twilight Dinner Party last week.

So far we have considered the case when the sun does attain a depression of 18°, but it is equally possible for this depression not to be attained. To investigate this, take ZG equal to 108°. .Now if G lies beyond B and E (the maximum depression of the sun), E being also below B, then the sun will rise and set, but never descend so low as to occasion true night, and the entire interval between sunrise and sunset will be twilight.^ This is the entire and exclusive Agreement between you and us regarding use of the Site and it cannot be modified, except as specifically described below in Section 2.

The phenomenon known as the after-glow, or second twilight, has been referred to a second reflection of the solar rays in the atmosphere.

Simple English

Twilight means either dawn (in the morning) or dusk (in the evening).

In the morning, dawn is when it is not dark any more, and the light of the sun is just starting to appear. In the evening, it is the other way around and that phenomenon is called dusk. The sun has disappeared, and darkness is setting in. Light fades away.

The following has been defined:

  • Civil twilight is when the sun is less than 6° below the horizon. It ends at sunrise in the morning or follows sunset in the evening.
  • Nautical twilight is when the sun is between 6° and 12° below the horizon.
  • Astronomical twilight is when the sun is between 12° and 18° below the horizon.

For all these definitions, the horizon is at the sea which is flat.
