UTEK ( [1] was founded by Clifford M. Gross, Ph.D. in 1997. The original concept was to facilitate “open innovation” through the acquisition of university-developed technologies by companies that needed technologies to grow. [2]

The company went public in October 2000, raising US$ 6.0 million. UTEK is currently traded on the NYSE-Alternext under the stock symbol UTK.

UTEK is headquartered in Tampa, Florida, with offices in Chicago, Washington, D.C., London, and Shanghai. As of March 2009, the company has over 450 clients.

The name “UTEK” originated from a phonetic contraction of University and Technology.


UTEK’s services enable clients to become stronger innovators by providing unique foresight, strategic planning, comprehensive research, intellectual property analytics and global technology sourcing.

UTEK utilizes its “open innovation” program to acquire and transfer socially responsible technologies from university and government laboratories worldwide. Together these research organizations, currently numbering in excess of 2,000 represent a tremendous source of intellectual capital.
