Una is one of the districts of Himachal Pradesh, India, and shares its border with the Hoshiarpur District of Punjab. The terrain is plain with small hills. Una has been identified as a main industrial hub. Over the years, Una has turned into transit town for travellers going to the famous city of Dharamsala or the locations within the Himalayas like Kullu, Manali, Jawalamukhi, Chintpurni etc.

Una is home to the "Killa", which is a historical fort and an ancestral home of the descendants of the first guru of the Sikhs, Guru Nanak. Una has very good and prominent villages like Daulatpur Chownk, Pirthipur Una etc. Many of the civil servants of GOI and GOHP are from these villages.

People

Local languages are Punjabi, Pahari and Hindi. People typically wear kurta and pajamas for men and salwar kameez for the women.

According to 2001 census, total population of Una is: 447,967. There are 997 females per 1000 males. Literacy rate is at 81.09%. Total area of district is 1549 km2.The population is mix of Hindus and Sikhs. Hindus are in majority and Sikhs in minority.

Una lies in its south western part of Himachal Pradesh and it is circumscribed by beautiful Shivalik ranges of Himalayas. On the 1st September,1972 the Himachal Pradesh Govt. reorganised the then Kangra district into three districts namely Una, Hamirpur and Kangra. The famous places of Una are ‘Chintpurni’ Goddess temple, Dera Baba Barbhag Singh, Dera Baba Rudru, Joggi Panga, Dharamshala Mahanta, Dhunsar Mahadev Temple Talmehra, Pir Nigaha - Madanpur Basoli, Shivbari Temple Gagret and Mini Secretariat.

The one of the best place to visit is Dehra baba Rudranand which is situated in Village Amlehar 20 kilometer from Dist UNA. It is being blessed by Baba Sugrivanand Ji maharaj. It has a past history from the time of mugals. the village was blessed by Bangali baba in 1600 BC , the temple has chabutra and akahnd dhuna. Maharaja Ranjit Singh has visited the temple during his tenure. After bangali baba the area transferred to other gurujis and now finally blessed by Baba Sugrivanand Ji maharaj. Every year there is enchantment of non stop Shrimat Bhagawat Kataha in the month of June.

The village was established by three brothers who migrated from Hoshiarpur past 300 years ago and now its present population is 800 people and the village has got all the latest facilities. The village was blessed by five freedom fighter who went to rangoon with Netagi Subash armed forces. The village has got best state school and state hospital till date.

The Tehsil Amb has got another village called Jaswa village which was hailed by Jaswa King in 1600 BC. Presently people of that place migrated to other places and now called as Jaswal. The historical Jaswa Quila still exists, it had 900 people during tenure of Jaswa King. He brought Balaji god to that place. the Jaswa village is being blessed by Jatheri mata and Nag Baba. Still the things exist. It is the highest worshiped place for Jaswals. The Queen of King Jaswa was Sati , when she came to know that the king has lost battel with mugals in Jammu. Still all things remain intacked in shape of khandar. Do visit that place when you go to UNA.

Most amazing place in Una is DeraBaba Rudru. It has the "Akhand Dhoona" that is little from more than 100 years. It is believed that the holy ash of "Akhand dhoona" can cure various diseases. It is famous for removing poison of snake. Person bit by a snake can be bought to Dera Baba Rudru, for taking out the poison by holy water. It provides 24 hours free food to all visitors and needy people called "Langar".

Some other small towns in this district are Amb, Gagret, Pirthipur, Daulatpur, Chintpurni, Chinnmastika Dhamm; a holy temple, Mehatpur, Pubowal. Pubowal and Pirthipur is an ideal village with small rivulet and good mountains and with full greenery. The town has famous Shiv temple and nearby Babaji temple on hillock. It is an ideal place to live in natural Harmony. Chintpurni is a very famous temple and millions of people pay visit to this temple each year. This small town is divided into two district Kangra & Una. The major industrial hubs of Una consists of Gagret and Tahliwal. Gagret being main industrial hub while Tahliwal is an emerging industrial location.However industry is not only limited to these two towns but Mehatpur is also a small industrial unit of its own Mehatpur have many small scale industries like flour mills,manufacturing stationary and it has got Rangar Brewery. It is well known for its educational system.Una is now becoming a big education hub, kc institute in pandoga and Indus international university in bathu are the most famous examples.

One more thing about Una which is popular is its very popular Shiva temple which is about 2.5 km from its main bus stand that is MAHADEV mandir is situated in village kotlan klan and one another shiv mandir at a distance of 10 k.m. named as BANORE MAHADEV at village Chattera situated on UNA -NANGAL highway built by pandavs while they were on their exile of on year. there is another small but very beautiful and blessed fully by nature village Dangoli. It is just the neibour village of kotla klan and BHRITHARI temple and one another temple which is situated on the top hill of the village MANDIR SHRI GUDAD NATH Ji is a heaven like place. Another popular place is Tiar village which is about 16 km from UNA's main bus stand there is very nice water fall and after just 7 km away from this there is another Lord Shiva's temple i.e. SADASHIV.Peernigah is also a famous spiritual place in una , it is 8 km far away from una.Every Thursday here comes lot of peoples. Una is also famous for 84 Pourian Temple, which is located in the middle of the town. The very Famous Song "Yeh Duniya Yeh Mehfil Mere Kaam Kee Nahi" from Film Heer- Ranjha is also picturised here.

UNA is most popular for its players. Also many players from Una represent our country and its live example are Mr Charanjeet Singh who received Padamashree award from Indian Government in 1964 in hockey, Mr Deepak Thakur who is in Indian national hockey team, and football is also very popular here. From village Nangal Jarialan 78 people took part in 2nd world war out of which 73 lost their lives.

Other extraordinary achiever from Una is Mr U C Mahajan who translated the famous astrology book in Urdu "Lal kitab" to English. Dehlan is another village situated on the main highway i.e Nagal-Una road. This village is so big that it has three panchyats.

Economy

The people of Una mainly earn their livelihood through Agriculture. but now due the nearby industrial areas like Tahliwal and Mehatpur,it is have some another source of income also. there is now also popular industries of luminous, Mahindera in Gagret.

Most of the people move out of town for professional education. Resulting in a migration of people to cities for jobs and income. Most of the jobs are from public sector.

Transport

Una district can be reached by a variety of transports from New Delhi. It is located just about 375 km north of New Delhi and 120 KM from Chandigarh. The city of Una is also connected by train from New Delhi.

Famous Personalities

  • Mr Charanjeet Singh:Padamashree award recipient in 1964 for contribution to hockey.
  • Mr Deepak Thakur: A field hockey forward player from India, who made his international debut for the Men's National Team in June 1999 in a test serie against Germany.
  • Summi: Summi is a young teenage girl from Una who won the beauty contest of Himachal Pradesh in 2008. She went on to become the second runner up in Miss India Contest 2009 and is representing India for Miss World.

The largest, according to 2001 census, and one of the most magnificient villages under this district is Dehlan. People from this village have gone ahead to make their mark in education, defence and science. It is only a matter of time that they come back to serve their village and district. Brahmins and Jats are the dominant communities of this village.

There is an excellent village called Amlehar. It has Baba Rudranand Lord Shiva temple, it has tributeries full running of water, it is situated in hill and agricultural land is also there and is fed with water body , it has rich jungle,village is full of all utilities such road,telephone,school,electricity, full literacry record. People live there are Jaswal hail from Maharaja Ranjit Singh time. This village was established by three brothers migrated from hoshiarpur mangoal village. It has five freedom fighters one of them is late dafedar kali ram. It is rich in all type of resourses basically man machine money etc. People are very desent lovable.

There is also another excellent village called Pubowal. The famous places of Pubowal are Thakurdwara Pubowal, Dera Baba Gidgidda jee Pubowal.

Pirthipur is an ideal village with small rivulet and good mountains and with full grennery. The town has famous Shiv temple and nearby Babaji temple on hillock. It is an ideal place to live in natural Harmony. Chintpurni is very famous temple and millions people visit from all part of the country to this place each year. This small town is divided into two district Kangra & Una.
