The 1980 United States Senate Election in South Dakota was held on November 2, 1980. Incumbent Democratic Senator and former presidential candidate George McGovern was defeated by Congressman James Abdnor convincingly, in what would result in a Republican landslide known as the Reagan Revolution. The influence of Ronald Reagan's popularity in Congressional elections came to be known as Reagan's coattails.
