The University of Kurdistan - Hawler (UKH) is the fifth university located in the Kurdistan Region established in 2006.



The University of Kurdistan Hawler is a new initiative in the federal region of Kurdistan in Iraq, funded by the Regional Government of Kurdistan. It is an independent public institution, and it will maintain this independence as an indispensable condition of teaching, learning and research. It currently offers degrees in Economics and Finance, Management and Business Studies, Politics and International Relations, Sociology and Social Policy, Modern History and Information Technology, but in the coming years it will expand to teach humanities and natural sciences as well. The medium of instruction and research is English.


The University of Kurdistan - Hawler (UKH) was founded by Prime Minister HE Nechirvan Barzani in 2006 to provide the education and research which will enable the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to flourish within the context of Iraq, in the wider Region and on the international stage. UKH will educate men and women to take up official positions in the KRG, to develop the economic activity of the Kurdistan Region, and to lead in its intellectual life. It will also be the institute of choice that KRG will turn to for policy development through intellectual excellence and practical analysis. The University has been the arena for lively political discussion in Iraq Kurdistan.


The University of Kurdistan - Hawler has started its academic activities with 5 departments in its first draft of academic organisational structure; in addition to the English Department. Its main goal is to develop existing skill of English language of local students, whose major language is Kurdish.
