The University of Washington Educational
Outreachis the continuing educationand professional developmentunit
of the University of Washington(UW),
the nationally recognized public researchinstitution based in Seattle, Washington. Founded in 1912, UW Educational
Outreach, was the branch of the university offering correspondence
courses, and has since grown to present a wide variety of
educational opportunities and online learningfor
a diverse group of students.[1].
UW Educational Outreach has become a gateway to the community,
granting alternate points of access to the UW for nontraditional
students, most of them working adults[2]. The
University of Washington Educational Outreach (UWEO) is located in
the popular University Districtof
Seattle, Washington, and is housed primarily in the UW Tower, a skyscraper that
is 325 feet in length. "The UW Tower is the tallest building in the
University District, providing a view of the entire campus, the
Seattle skyline and a panoramic display of the surrounding
mountains." [3]The
University of Washington purchased what is now the UW Tower from
Safeco in 2006. The UWEO organization is currently headed by Vice
Provost David
Szatmary, who joined the UW in 1984. Credited with developing the first
certificate program at the UW, he added 60 more certificate
programs and helped establish more than 35 degree programs during
the next 24 years. Since 1999[4],
Szatmary has served as Vice Provost of UW Educational Outreach,
which includes UW Professionaland Continuing Education. He oversees a staff
of more than 200 engaged in development and administration of the
UW’s evening undergraduatedegree completion program; 30
professionally focused master’s and doctoral degrees; and UW summer
quarter. Under Szatmary’s leadership[5], UW
Educational Outreach emerged as a national leader in the field of
professionaleducationwith a series of
innovative programs and partnerships. For
example, in 2001, UWEO was one of
the first to offer free online classes, "Other universities offer
free course material over the Internet, such as class outlines,
lecture notes and handouts. But none offer the material in a
'functional, coherent way' for people to learn, Szatmary said.
'We're the first, and that's why I'm so excited about this,' he
said." [6]. In partnershipwith the
University of Washington schools, colleges, and departments, UW Educational
Outreach administers five evening undergraduatedegrees,
30 evening master'sand doctoral degrees,
and more than 125 certificate programs in a wide array of disciplinesfrom Artsand Writingto Businessand Biotech, among other offerings [7]. In
2008, UW Educational Outreach served more than 42,000 students with
more than 6,000 programs and courses. The organization attracted
89,000 enrollments and posted gross revenuesof nearly $70
million[8].
Programs administered by UW Educational Outreach are developed and
taught by UW facultyand communityand industryleaders[9]. "For
an online course, faculty work with designers to develop packages
that may include streamed video, illustrated lectures and online
student discussion forums"[10].Offered
primarily in the evenings, on weekends, and online, they are designed
and scheduled to meet the needs of working adults[11].

programs is on practical application and most are project-based.

department.
