1990s

1991

Action 52

(Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Genesis)

  • There were grandiose plans for a line of merchandise including action figures, t-shirts, a comic book series and even a television cartoon based on the Cheetahmen, but these were eventually scrapped due to bad word-of-mouth, as well as scathing reviews, citing the numerous technical issues of the game.[16][17]

1993

Link: The Faces of Evil and Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon

(CD-i)

1995

Waterworld

(Virtual Boy)

  • Waterworld is widely regarded as the worst Virtual Boy game out of the 22 games released in its short life. It is the lowest reviewed game at Planet Virtual Boy[22] and has the lowest reader review average at sites such as GameFAQs.[23]
  • Steven L. Kent, author of The Ultimate History of Video Games and The Making of Doom 3, selected it as one of his choices for five worst video games of all time.[24]

White Men Can't Jump

(Atari Jaguar)

1996

Catfight

(PC)

1999

Superman 64

(Nintendo 64)[30]

  • Listed as the worst game of all time by GameTrailers,[9] the worst game on a Nintendo platform by Nintendo Power,[31] and as the worst comic book video game adaptation in history by GameSpy and GameDaily.[32][33]
  • Critics were overwhelmingly negative in reviews, with Joe Fielder of GameSpot writing, "This is easily the worst game I've ever played,"[34] and other sites such as IGN[35] and Game Revolution panning the game for its atrocious set-up, gameplay, and graphics.[36]

2000s

2001

Kabuki Warriors

(Xbox)

  • Though critics attacked the graphics and overall presentation of Kabuki Warriors as exceptionally bad,[37][38] they rated the game's easy and repetitive gameplay as its greatest shortcoming.
  • GameSpot remarked that "The combo system, which revolves around that one attack button... essentially consists of slamming the A button repeatedly to execute multiple attacks."[37] In support of this claim, Team Xbox's reviewer recounted "I held the controller for my two year old and told him to keep pressing the A button. He did nothing else and beat... his opponent. He even got bonus points because he was never touched!"[38]
  • Received the lowest review score (1/10) in the history of Edge.[39]
  • It averages 32/100 on Metacritic based on 15 reviews.[40]
  • It has an average score of 35% according to GameRankings.[41]

2003

Aquaman: Battle for Atlantis

(GameCube, Xbox)[42]

  • Named as one of the worst games of all time by X-Play, it was the inspiration for X-Play's annual award for the worst game of the year, "The Golden Mullet", a reference to the hairstyle Aquaman features in the game.[43] Similarly, the 2003 Nintendo Power awards had a category that was made only to give credit to Aquaman and "his sweet mullet".
  • The Xbox version averaged 26/100 while the GameCube version averaged 27/100 on Metacritic.[44]

Charlie's Angels

(PlayStation 2, GameCube)

  • The game has a rating of 23 on Metacritic.[45]
  • Game Informer said "This game is nothing short of an embarrassment."[46]
  • GameSpot called it a "horrific display of ineptitude."[47]
  • On GameRankings, Charlie's Angels received a 23%, with 24 reviews.[48]
  • The game was ranked #1 on GameTrailers' list of the Top 10 Worst Movie Games of all time, who said "The game is degrading, not to women, not even to video games, but to humanity itself".[8]

Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing

(PC)[49]

  • Listed as one of the worst games ever made by reviews at GameSpot,[50] Thunderbolt,[51] and Netjak.[52]
  • Gamespot's review began with the statement that the game is "as bad as your mind allows you to comprehend."[50] Alex Navarro's video review has no narration whatsoever; it consists of in-game footage interspersed with wider shots showing Navarro staring in disbelief, crying, and beating his head on a desk.[50] GameSpot also awarded it its 2004 Flat-Out Worst Game award, with its "trophy" being the infamous three-handled "YOU'RE WINNER !"[sic] trophy from the game.[53] It remains on record as the lowest score on GameSpot (bearing the lowest score possible: 1.0).
  • Has an average rating of 8% on Metacritic[54], and 4% on GameRankings.[55]
  • Big Rigs sold well despite (and possibly because of) negative reviews.[53]
  • Was named #2 as the "Worst Video Game of the Decade" at the "2009 SAGY Awards" by ScrewAttack, losing only to Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).[56]

2005

Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie

(Nintendo DS, PSP)

  • Holds an aggregate score of 28/100 on Metacritic.[57]
  • GameSpot gave it a 2.1/10, calling it such a poor excuse of a first-person shooter that other developers should study it and use it as a guide when putting together similar style shooters in the future.[57]
  • IGN gave it a 3.0/10, explaining that the "gameplay stinks, the fighting stinks, the puzzles stink, the bugs problems stink. Enjoy!"[58]
  • PALGN gave it a 1/10, calling it borderline unplayable due to its horrid graphics.[57]
  • However, the console and PC versions went into receiving positive reviews, with an average score of 82 on Metacritic.

2006

World War II Combat: Road to Berlin

(PC, Xbox)

  • Chunky player movement and aiming made it virtually impossible to get a good aim on enemies, which proved to be frustrating because the enemy soldiers could shoot at the player with pinpoint accuracy even if they were a far distance away from the player. Many other elements also added to the frustration. The player could not pick up any med-kits, and health only recharged at the end of each mission. The game automatically assigns weapons for each mission, which included a pistol, a secondary weapon, and an explosive weapon. However, only one weapon could be put in the secondary slot. This meant that in the sniper missions, since the sniper rifle is your secondary weapon, players could only use the pistol for close combat. However, the worst aspect for many players was that the Allied soldiers would some times shoot at the player instead of the enemy. This was especially irritating because friendly fire could not be turned off. The game wasn't much better in terms of graphics. Vehicles had no actual animations, and characters looked very blocky, just like much of the environments and level designs in the game. Additionally, while the game does have a multiplayer mode, the network code was extremely glitchy. Constant lag issues caused players to randomly "teleport" back and forth on maps. About half of the time, bullets could pass right through opponents like they weren't there, again due to lag issues. The game also featured offline play with bots, but the bot AI constantly cheated to get 100% accuracy, making offline play just as unplayable as the online play
  • The game holds a rare 2.0/10 on game reviewing website Gamespot [59]
  • The game holds a record 1.0/10 by the Official Xbox magazine. This is only the third game to ever achieve such an abysmal rating, the other two games being Pulse Racer & Bad Boys: Miami Takedown

Bomberman: Act Zero

(Xbox 360)

  • The game received negative critique from many reviewers due to its contrasts from other Bomberman games, such as a more rustic cyberpunk theme over the colorful and cartoonish style of other Bomberman games.[60].
  • The game has a a Metacritic score of 34/100,[61] and averages 33% out of 56 reviews on GameRankings.[62]
  • The game won the 2006 Flat-Out Worst Game by GameSpot[63]

Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)

(Xbox 360, PlayStation 3)

  • GamesRadar called the story "ridiculously overwrought"[64] and "conceptually challenged."[65]
  • GameTrailers concluded that the game is "flat-out unfinished, unfairly difficult, and most importantly, just isn't much fun."[66][67]
  • GameSpot called the game "a mess from top to bottom."[68][69]
  • IGN admitted that "it offers a few good ideas, and a handful of exciting moments, but none of this helps the game recover from a catastrophic loss in control."[70]
  • ScrewAttack called the game the "Worst Video Game of the Decade" on their "SAGY Awards 2009" list, winning against Big Rigs.[56]

2007

Game Party

(Wii)

  • Has a Metacritic score of 25 out of 100.[71]
  • Also giving this game a 1 out of 10, Eurogamer criticized the graphics and the fun factor of the game, saying "The Game Party experience is like going to a party where there's nothing to drink but Tesco Value brandy and there are only four other guests and they're all racist and then your ex turns up and gets off with a Danish supermodel."[72]
  • IGN said that this game started the "shovelware" of the Wii (they gave a 3.5 out of 10), criticizing the graphics and the games themselves.[73]
  • AceGamez also gave the game a 1 out of 10, criticizing the controls and saying that the game is trying to unsuccessfully simulate the fun of games like WarioWare: Smooth Moves.[74]

The following is a list of video games which have had a history of negative reception from video gaming publications and by players (in factors such as sales and community reaction).

Contents

1980s

1982

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial received significant criticism for its poor quality graphics and redundant/confusing gameplay.

(Atari 2600)

  • Listed as the worst game of all time by PC World,[1] Electronic Gaming Monthly,[2] and Michael Dolan, editor of FHM magazine.[3] Some considered it so bad that the title screen was the only good part of the entire game.[4]
  • Many copies of the game were returned to stores, which led to the Atari video game burial, in which Atari dumped truckloads of E.T. cartridges into a landfill in New Mexico after they failed to sell.[5][6]
  • The game is commonly cited as one of the main causes of the video game crash of 1983, as Atari had hoped that brand loyalty would keep consumers buying their games regardless of quality.[6]
  • Ranked as the second worst movie game on the "Top Ten Worst Movie Games" (losing only to Charlie's Angels) by GameTrailers.[7]
  • It was ranked #2 Worst on GameTrailers' "Top Ten Best and Worst Games of All Time" losing only to Superman 64.[8]

Pac-Man (Atari 2600)

(Atari 2600)

  • Based on an unfinished prototype in an attempt to release by the holiday season of 1981.[9]
  • Contained many differences from the arcade version due to the limitations of the console, such as "flickering" ghosts and lower-quality sound effects.[9]
  • The game, even with its flaws, still managed to sell well.[10]
  • 10 million copies were produced, even though only 6 million Atari 2600 consoles had been sold.
  • It, along with E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, have been credited as significant factors in the cause of the 1983 video game industry crash.[11]

Custer's Revenge

(Atari 2600)

  • Features a crude simulation of an apparent rape of a Native American woman named Revenge,[12] and has been called one of the most violent games of all time.[13]
  • Listed as the most shameful game of all time by GameSpy,[12] as the third-worst game of all time by PC World,[1] and GameTrailers[8] and as the ninth-worst game by Seanbaby in Electronic Gaming Monthly.[14]
  • Named the third-naughtiest game of all time by Seanbaby.[15]
  • It was declared #3 Worst on Gametrailers' "Top Ten Best and Worst Games of All Time." On it, GameTrailer editor Geoff Keighley said, "It pissed me off as a gamer to see a game like that because... those kinds of games give the industry a bad reputation."[8]

1984

The Great Space Race

(ZX Spectrum)

  • The hotly anticipated follow-up to Legend's popular and influential graphic adventure Valhalla. Pre-release publicity boasted that the game contained "technical effects never before seen in home computer software", with "true solid 3D graphics".[16] The game was actually coded largely in BASIC.[17]
  • Described by Sinclair User as "one of the most vacuous products we have seen."[18]
  • In the words of Big K magazine, "Graphics are great - by 1982 standards. In 1985 they look amateurish and unprofessional".[19]

1990s

1991

Action 52

(Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Genesis)

  • Renowned for being among the all-time worst games ever made for that system, especially the Cheetahmen, which was released with the cartridge.
  • Received a score of 0.6 from MobyGames based on user ratings.[20]
  • Numerous glitches plagued most, if not all of the games, making many of them practically unplayable. It is rumored that the game did not go through quality assurance due to the glitches, which ranged from minor (music half-ending when certain criteria are met in Operation Full Moon and Sharks, or the music programming completely malfunctioning in Lollipops) to major (impassable point in Fuzz Power and level restarting halfway in Non Human). Also very few of the games can line up multiple sprites efficiently, resulting in flicker.
  • There were grandiose plans for a line of merchandise including action figures, t-shirts, a comic book series and even a television cartoon based on the Cheetahmen, but these were eventually scrapped due to bad word-of-mouth, as well as scathing reviews, citing the numerous technical issues of the game.[21][22]
  • Some also criticised it for parts that they said had potential to induce a seizure, for instance the sprite flicker and flashing in one level of Cheetahmen.
  • Some noted poor grammar in some of the game ("Crytical [sic] Bypass" and "Bubble Gum Rossie [sic]"). One reviewer even questioned if the game developers knew basic English.
  • Of note is that Active Enterprises advertised a competition in which anyone who could complete level 5 of Ooze (NES version) would be entered into a prize draw to win $104,000. It was soon discovered that the game would crash on level 3, making the prize impossible to win.

1992

Count Duckula 2

(ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC)

  • Your Sinclair awarded the game 9%,[23] and it was also voted by readers as the worst game of all time.[24]
  • Amstrad Action awarded the game 3%.[25]

1993

Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon

(CD-i)

  • Wand of Gamelon: Named the #6 worst game of all time by Seanbaby[26] and the #5 by GameTrailers[8]. The cut scenes were called "infamous" and "cheesy" by IGN[27], and other reviewers as "bizarre" and "an absolute joke".[28]

1994

(Super Nintendo, Sega Mega Drive, Amiga)[29] (1995; Game Boy, Sega Game Gear)

  • Listed as the worst game of all time by Netjak[30] and was rated as the worst fighting game of all time by ScrewAttack.[31]
  • It is ranked #4 Worst on "Top Ten Best and Worst Games of All Time."[8]
  • SaveShaqfu.com is dedicated to save every copy of Shaq Fu that they can from Shaqfu.com, which is dedicated to collecting every copy of Shaq Fu by buying the game from anyone who owns it and destroying it.

1995

Waterworld

(Virtual Boy)

  • Steven L. Kent, author of The Ultimate History of Video Games and The Making of Doom 3, selected it as his choice for worst video game of all time.[34]

Zelda's Adventure

(CD-i)

Hong Kong 97

(Super Famicom)

  • Hong Kong 97 is a game made in Japan, and is set around the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong in 1997.[37] In the game it is said that, at the time, people from Mainland China started immigrating to Hong Kong and generally increasing the crime rate. As a countermeasure, Chin (Jackie Chan), a relative of Bruce Lee, was hired by the Hong Kong government (represented by Chris Patten) to wipe out all 1.2 billion people of China. Meanwhile in China, research was under way to bring the dead "Tong Shau Ping" (Deng Xiaoping) back to life as an ultimate weapon.[38] The game features poor quality graphics, difficult gameplay, and character control, and a bizarre storyline.[39]
  • The game has gained a cult following in Japan and Taiwan for its notoriously poor quality - it has been ranked as a kuso-ge (Japanese for "shitty game"), a game so bad that it's good.[40]

1996

Catfight

(PC)

  • According to the GameSpot review at the time, Catfight was "without a doubt, the worst computer game ever released."[41]

  • Game Informer also gave it a 2.0/10, commenting that the editor would say the physics were bad, but was afraid that "Albert Einstein would rise from his grave and stab me with a protractor for using the word "physics" in the same sentence as Gravity Games."[59]
  • GameSpot gave it a 1.7/10, describing it as an unfinished product that has no redeeming value.[59]

  • X-Play said it was "a waste of time and money."Template:Fact

Aquaman: Battle for Atlantis

(GameCube, Xbox)[65]

  • Named as one of the worst games of all time by X-Play, it was the inspiration for X-Play's annual award for the worst game of the year, "The Golden Mullet", a reference to the hairstyle Aquaman features in the game.[66] Similarly, the 2003 Nintendo Power awards had a category that was made only to give credit to Aquaman and "his sweet mullet".
  • The Xbox version received a 26/100 while the GameCube version received a 27/100 from Metacritic.[67]

Drake of the 99 Dragons

(PC, Xbox)

  • Gamespot began the review with "Just how bad is Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing? It's as bad as your mind allows you to comprehend."[75] Alex Navarro's video review of the game has no narration whatsoever; it just shows inane footage of the game, and Navarro staring in disbelief at the game, crying, and beating his head on the desk. It ends with him lying in the middle of the street.[75] GameSpot also awarded it its 2004 Flat-Out Worst Game award, with its "trophy" being the infamous three-handled "YOU'RE WINNER ! [sic]" trophy from the game.[78] It remains on record as the lowest review ever recorded on GameSpot (bearing the lowest score possible: 1.0).
  • It is the lowest-rated game on Metacritic, with an average rating of 8 out of 100.[79]
  • It is the lowest-rated game on Game Rankings with an average rating of 4%.[80]
  • Big Rigs sold well despite (and possibly because of) negative reviews.[78]

  • The game was also ridiculed by websites such as the webcomic Penny Arcade for the fact that the Xbox version is compatible with the Xbox 360, yet other popular Xbox titles have not been given compatibility on the console.[88]

Ping Pals

(Nintendo DS)

  • Received overwhelmingly negative reviews for being too simplistic, and for being too similar to PictoChat, which is built into the Nintendo DS.

  • IGN gave it 3.5, calling it "a chat program for a system that already has a chat program", called it "a baffling concept" and compared it to selling ice to an Eskimo. The review ended with "Regardless of its "additional" content it offers over PictoChat, Ping Pals is easily the most unnecessary product for the system." [90]

Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie

(Nintendo DS)

  • Holds an aggregate score of 28/100 on Metacritic.[94]
  • GameSpot gave it a 2.8/10, calling it such a poor excuse of a first-person shooter that other developers should study it and use it as a guide when putting together similar style shooters in the future.[94]
  • IGN gave it a 3.0/10, explaining that the "gameplay stinks, the fighting stinks, the puzzles stink, the bugs problems stink. Enjoy!"[95]
  • PALGN gave it a 1/10, calling it borderline unplayable due to its horrid graphics.[94]
  • However, the console and PC versions went into receiving positive reviews, scoring as high as 8.2 on Gamespot.

  • It has a Metacritic rating of 19.[103]
  • It appears to be a carbon copy of Ninjabread Man, having the same controls, level design, enemies, and even the same glitches.
  • AceGamez gave it a 10 out of 100, saying, "Forged from middleware obtained from the bowels of Hell, Anubis II is a game with only the cruelest and most heartless of intentions. If for some reason this game finds its way into your home, witness as it engages your children (or anyone else) in a swift moment of neutrality before it throws off its cloak and shows its true colors."[104]
  • The title is frequently misread as "Anubis two", even though there are no previous 'Anubis' games. The 'II' is a name suffix, thus the title should be read as "Anubis the Second".

  • n-Revolution Magazine gave it a 1/10, calling it "just as bad as the TV show... if not worse."[107]

Ninjabread Man

(PC, PlayStation 2, Wii)

  • Metacritic gave the game a 20 out of 100 making it the fifth worst Wii game reviewed on the site.[109]
  • IGN gave the game a 1.5 out of 10, quoting "Is Ninjabread Man actually a good game? No chance. It’s buggy, oftentimes completely broken, somehow manages to have frame issues in tiny levels, and is completely ruthless if (and when) younger players die.".[110]
  • Giving the game a 1 out of 10, EuroGamer said that you can finish the game in half an hour.[111]
