Viridian is a blue-green pigment, a hydrated chromium(III) oxide, of medium saturation and relatively dark in value. It is composed more of green than blue. Specifically, it is a dark shade of spring green, the color between green and cyan on the color wheel. Viridian takes its name from the Latin viridis, meaning "green".

The first recorded use of viridian as a color name in English was in the 1860s (exact year uncertain). [2]

Viridian in culture

  • Viridian is the name of the 7th track of Between the Buried and Me's 2007 release, Colors. Singer/Keyboardist Tommy Rogers explains that this title was chosen because the band "felt it really fit the mood of the song."[3]
  • Viridian was the signature color of the [4] BBC Two identity from 1991 to 2001.
  • Viridian was referenced in the 1988 motion picture Beetlejuice by its name viridian and as its scientific name when the question arose of which color to paint a certain room in the house.
  • In the Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow versions, as well as their Game Boy Advance remakes, the second town the player passes through on their journey after leaving home is called Viridian City.
  • The name of Funimation's complete collection of Gunslinger Girl Season 1 is "The Viridian Collection".
  • "Viridian Joule" was the winning color name in Chevrolet’s Volt Paint-Color Naming Contest.[5]

In popular culture

Although viridian is a less-used color name in English, it is used in a number of cultural references, probably because it is derived from viridis, the Latin word for green, so using the word viridian sounds more elegant than simply referring to the Anglo-Saxon word green.
