Volvic is a brand of mineral water. Its source lies just to the north of the Puy de Dôme. The water's distinctive mineral content is due to the nearby volcano which last erupted in 5760 BC. [1]

The first of the springs in the area was tapped in 1922, and the first bottles appeared on the market in 1938. Today, Volvic waters are internationally known. Over 50% of the production of Volvic water is exported to more than 60 countries throughout the world. Two bottling plants produce over 1 billion bottles of water annually and are the principal employers of the local commune. In 1993, the Volvic Company was bought by the Danone Group.

Since 1997, Volvic has been using PETE, a recyclable material, to make their bottles [2].

Volvic also produces a range of fruit extract drinks in Europe named Volvic Touch of Fruit. In 2005 they were introduced in North America under the brand Volvic natural.

George the Volcano and Tyrannosaurus Alan

Recent television advertisements for Volvic feature two fictional characters: a tyrannosaurus rex named "Tyrannosaurus Alan" and a volcano named "George the Volcano" who discuss what volcanicty is and how Volvic mineral water is made. George the Volcano's voice was provided by Matthew Berry and the voice of Tyrannosaurus Alan was by Rick Buckley. These ads have been edited for comedic effect on the Internet.


The track "Bombay Theme" from the 1995 Bollywood film Bombay's soundtrack is an instrumental orchestral piece composed and arranged by A. R. Rahman and conducted by K. Srinivas Murthy, recently featured in the TV commercial for Volvic, starring Zinedine Zidane since 2000.

Volvic's recent campaign, "1L = 10L FOR AFRICA", means that for every one liter of Volvic purchased they promise to provide 10 litres of drinking water through their "well-creation" programme with World Vision in the countries of Ghana, Malawi, Mali and Zambia.

Another recent campaign is the 14 Day Challenge, in which people are challenged to drink 1.5 litres of Volvic mineral water everyday for 14 days, to achieve hydration to the body and mind.
