WKWI first came on in 1975. Its first Program Director was Raymond "Chip" Cook, who was later with WHAP Hopewell, and WSSV Petersburg, along with Richmond stations WMXB, WKHK, WRVQ, and WRVA. Cook's was the first voice heard on the station. WKWI was also Cook's very first commercial radio job.
