The West Frisian can mean:

  • West Frisian language, the language spoken in the Friesland province of the Netherlands
  • West Frisian (dialect), the Hollandic Dutch dialect spoken in the North Holland province of the Netherlands
  • West Frisian (language), a language that used to be spoken in the North Holland province of the Netherlands, possibly a precursor of the current West Frisian dialect

Usage notes

Some linguists consider West Frisian, Saterland Frisian, and North Frisian to be varieties of a single language called “Frisian”. Other linguists and the speakers consider them to be separate languages in a language group called “Frisian”.
