Interchange

Diagram of the stations on West End Lane and the lines running under it

In order to complete a journey on a single ticket, for example from Richmond to St Albans, a valid route is to change here as interchange is permitted between the stations via the street. The diagram shows the location of the three stations relative to each other. West Hampstead Thameslink to West Hampstead (North London Line) is a distance of approximately 100 yards (91 metres) along West End Lane; West Hampstead (Jubilee Line) is a similar distance to the south. Chiltern Railways services to and from London Marylebone station run along the route marked in black; platforms could be added to the south of the present Jubilee Line station to provide interchange facilities, as discussed below.

Overground - North London Line

This station, previously operated by Silverlink, is now part of the London Overground network.

West Hampstead Thameslink

The Thameslink station is named after the Thameslink railway route. Services are operated by First Capital Connect.

London Underground

The Tube station has been part of the Jubilee line since 1979. Formerly it was on the Bakerloo line.

Development

Chiltern Railways, the train company that runs train services from Birmingham and Aylesbury through the area to Marylebone railway station, has suggested adding new platforms on their line and creating a combined London Underground, London Overground, First Capital Connect and Chiltern station complex on the site of the three stations.

Under the proposals, new platforms would be built for the Chiltern Main Line, and possibly also for the Metropolitan line, and the Thameslink and North London Line stations would be relocated on the east side of West End Lane.[1] The redevelopment would involve demolishing existing buildings and the redevelopment of West End Lane as "a tree-lined boulevard".[2][3] The plans were put on hold in 2007 due to uncertainty over the North London Line rail franchise.[4]

In early 2008, the London Group of the Campaign for Better Transport published a plan[5] for an off-road, mainly orbital North and West London Light railway, sharing the orbital Dudding Hill Line freight corridor, and taking over at least one of the two Midland Railway freight lines which run through West Hampstead Thameslink station.
