Returning to Austin, Bliss tries out for the "Hurl Scouts", a derby team that has never won a game. Having no real experience, Bliss is nevertheless faster than any girl on the team, and makes the cut. Despite the determination of "Razor" (Andrew Wilson) their coach, the other "Scouts" are happy to be number 2 in every game they play. .Razor has made such a science out of roller derby that he even prepares "play books". (The Scouts have no interest in Razor's coaching until he "persuades" another team to use one of the plays against the Scouts, which they unleash with clockwork precision.^ The band had a falling out soon after, though played one show in 1991 before breaking up.

After realizing she needs to be ruthless in Roller Derby, Bliss realizes she also needs to take charge in other aspects of her life and her parents and old friends are eventually able to accept that Roller Derby is where she belongs, even if only for "the moment".[2]

Critical response

Critical reception for Whip It was generally positive. Based on 140 reviews collected by Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an overall approval rating from critics of 82 percent, with an average score of 7/10.[6] Among Rotten Tomatoes' Cream of the Crop, which consists of popular and notable critics from the top newspapers, websites, television, and radio programs,[7] the film holds an overall approval rating of 83 percent.[8] By comparison, Metacritic calculated an average score of 67, based on 31 reviews.[9]

Box office

Initial studio estimates showed Whip It in a tie for #6 in its opening weekend, tying with the widely-released Capitalism: A Love Story, but it wound up taking 6th place with $4,650,812 behind Zombieland, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs in its third weekend, the Toy Story/Toy Story 2 3-D double feature, Surrogates in its second weekend, and The Invention of Lying.[10] The film grossed $13,043,363 in North America.[1]

Awards

.Drew Barrymore was nominated for a Bronze Horse at the Stockholm Film Festival.^ I'm ready for Drew Barrymore to get her Oscar film so much now (she rocked the hell out of "Grey Gardens"), and "Whip It" surely won't be it, but maybe that's okay too.
