Winthrop Paroo is the name of a character in The Music Man. In the film, Winthrop is portrayed by Ron Howard and in the original Broadway version by Eddie Hodges.

Character

Winthrop is a very shy, highly withdrawn boy, thus so because of the death of his father. He has no friends with the exception of his older sister, Marian Paroo. He is noted for having a prominent lisp and gets teased about it by his neighbor Amaryllis, who actually likes him. When con man Harold Hill comes to town, he befriends Winthrop and engages in such activities as taking Winthrop fishing and promising to teach him how to play the cornet. When Winthrop learns that Harold has been lying to him, he feels betrayed until the end of the production, when Harold leads Winthrop in the River City Boys Band.
