'Yugapurushan' is a 2010 film about the life and times of Sree Narayana Guru. The movie is directed by R.Sukumaran, who has previously directed Rajashilpi and Padamudhra, both of which were critically acclaimed films. The film has an ensemble cast.Thalaivasal Vijay dons the role of Sree Naryana Guru[1] the 20th century saint of Kerala , India. The magnum opus was in the making for more than fifteen years according to the director R.Sukumaran. Over 2000 hand drawn images constitute the story board. Actor Mohanlal was initially considered to portray Swami Vivekananda but later that part was deleted from the story. The cast includes some of the best in the Malayalam Movie Industry. Mammootty plays K.C.Kuttan an almost rebel who believes in putting the words of Sree Narayana Guru into action.

Sree Narayana Guru

The life and teachings of Sree Narayana Guru holds relevance in these times of trouble where suspicion and hatred are the norms of friendly conduct. A movie focussing on a man whose mission in life was the upliftment of people from ignorance is very much welcome. Born into Ezhava family at Chemapanzhanthi in Trivandrum in 1856 he led an ascetic life teaching his followers the goodness of life.

A peace loving non violent sadhu his teaching and philosophies echoed all over and had an impact so large in Kerala that he was selected as the “Malayalee of the Century” in a survey conducted by Malayala Manorama. A poet, Vedic Scholar, his mastery over literature helped him to understand the ways of the world and also contribute immensely in the forms of writings and poems to a sea of followers who reverently call him Gurudevan. His resting abode at Sivagiri Mutt in Varkala draws thousands of devotees every year .

Plot

The story revolves around the life and teachings of Sree Narayana Guru.Variousevents in his life like the Aruvikkara movement, Vaikom Satyagraha are detailed. The movie involves two major sub plots which highlights the relevance of the guru and his teachings as well as his love to his fellow beings one where an intercaste couple portrayed by Navya Nair and Kalabhavan Mani fights the caste establishment with the blessings of Gurudevan. Another sub plot involves a family where Jagathy Sreekumar plays a drunken abusive husband and his wife( Kalpana ) who is at the receiving end seeks the Guru's help and finally with the Guru's blessing Jagathy Sreekumar returns to the path of righteousness. The movie consists of four songs penned by Kaithapram Damodaran Namboothiri and two poems by Kumaranasan.

R.Sukumaran(Director)

R.Sukumaran is an artist of repute. His paintings have won international acclaim and recognition all over the world. His entry into film making was incidental. While on an exhibition in Germany he was invited to make a movie and thus began his journey in the industry. His first movie was Padamudra which was both critically and commercially successful .The movie explored the father son relation. This was followed by Rajashilpi which bordered on the realms of fantasy. Yugapurushan has been in the making for over fifteen years. This movie he says has been a childhood ambition, a destiny. His devotion to Sree Narayana Guru is what promted him to make this movie.

Trivia

The movie has been in the making for more than 15 years now by its director R.Sukumaran.

Mohanlal was initially cast as "Swami Vivekananda" ,a cameo rolein the movie which comes in the flashback,but later on withdrew from the movie due to problems with his shooting dates.

The casting of the main character, Sree Narayana Guru was done after extensive hunt for the right person resembling the Guru.

The movie will also present historic personalities like Mahatma Gandhi, Tagore, Chattambi Swamikal, Kumaran Asan, Padmanabhan Palpu(Dr. Palpu), T.K. Madhavan, Ayyankali and Mannathu Padmanabhan.
