Club career

Zhang Yaokun started his professional career in 2000 with Dalian Shide where he continued to established himself as a regular. The highlight of his career with Dalian Shide came in 2002 when he won the Chinese Jia-A League title[1], during this period it was the highest tier of professional football in China.

He moved to Sichuan Guancheng in the 2005 China Super League season where he quickly established himself as a key member of the team where they finished 9th, only to find the club disbanding before the next season[2].

He returned to Dalian Shide the following China Super League season in 2006 where he continued to be a key member of the squad.

International career

After his impressive displays for Dalian Shide he was called into the 2004 AFC Asian Cup squad where he made several appearances frequently coming on as a substitute playing in numerous positions in defence[3].

He continued to be a regular member of the national team that qualified for the 2007 AFC Asian Cup[4]. During this tournament he and Li Weifeng were the first choice centre-back pair[5]. After the unsuccessful tournament the replacing manager Vladimir Petrovic preferred playing Zhang Yaokun at right-back[6].
